Cozumel in 7 hours from the cruise port
A 7-hour window in Cozumel is enough for a real day — if you spend it in the right order. Here is a plan timed backwards from your safe return, not forwards from a wish list.
Ships dock, they never tender, at one of three piers: Puerta Maya and the International Pier (SSA) sit a few kilometres south of town, while Punta Langosta drops passengers straight into downtown San Miguel. Check the terminal in advance, since it changes the baseline taxi time. Union-regulated taxis queue right outside every pier with fixed rates posted in pesos, so there is no need to book ahead or haggle. Mexican immigration officers do a quick document check on arrival and departure — far lighter than a passport-control queue, but worth a few extra minutes on a morning when several ships dock together.

Independent vs guided
Cozumel rewards going independent. English is widely spoken, taxi rates are fixed and posted, and San Miguel is easy to navigate on foot. The exception is anything that depends on a boat slot or marine-park permit — reef snorkelling trips and dive excursions sell out on busy mornings, so book those ahead. A pre-arranged driver or beach-club transfer also removes the one real friction point: finding a taxi back from somewhere quiet like Punta Sur, when every other cab is already ferrying someone else’s group home.

Does the ship dock or tender at Cozumel?
Cozumel is a dock port — ships tie up at Puerta Maya, the International Pier or Punta Langosta, never at anchor. There is no tender queue to plan around.
How far is San Miguel from the cruise pier?
It depends on the terminal. Punta Langosta puts passengers in downtown San Miguel on foot; Puerta Maya and the International Pier sit about 3.5 km south, an eight-to-ten-minute taxi ride.
Do I need to book snorkelling in advance?

Is Punta Sur worth the trip?
