Naples in 3 hours from the cruise port
A 3-hour window in Naples is enough for a real day — if you spend it in the right order. Here is a plan timed backwards from your safe return, not forwards from a wish list.
You’ll dock directly at Stazione Marittima (Molo Angioino), inside Naples’ working port and right at the edge of the old city — this is not a shuttle-bus port. Walk out of the terminal gates and you’re within fifteen minutes of Piazza del Plebiscito and Via Toledo on foot. For Pompeii or Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana train departs from Napoli Centrale (Garibaldi), itself about 2.5 km from the terminal; the Alibus shuttle (line 3S, around €5, roughly 35 minutes with stops) is the easiest way to cover that leg, since walking through the port traffic isn’t pleasant. For Capri or Sorrento by sea, the hydrofoil terminal at Molo Beverello is a short walk from the ship — a genuine convenience most gateway ports don’t offer.

Independent vs guided
Inside Naples itself, independent is easy and arguably better — the historic centre is dense, walkable and full of things a guide would only slow you down for. The calculation changes for Pompeii and Capri: both are doable independently (Circumvesuviana to Pompeii, hydrofoil to Capri), but both also involve a connection you don’t control, and a missed train or a fully booked ferry can eat your afternoon. A pre-booked skip-the-line Pompeii tour or a Capri transfer with a guaranteed return sailing removes that risk — worth paying for if your all-aboard time is early or your itinerary is tight.

Does the ship dock in Naples, or anchor offshore?
Naples is a dock port. You walk straight off at Stazione Marittima, right at the edge of the historic centre — no tender involved.
How do I get to Pompeii from the ship?
Take the Alibus shuttle (about 35 minutes) to Napoli Centrale, then the Circumvesuviana train toward Sorrento (about 35–40 minutes) to the Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri stop. Budget around 75 minutes each way door to door.
Can I visit Capri in a single port day?
The hydrofoil from Molo Beverello, a short walk from the ship, takes about 50 minutes each way. It’s doable on a full port day, but ferry schedules and queues leave little margin — a guaranteed return sailing is worth booking.
What can I see without leaving Naples?
Plenty. Spaccanapoli, the Royal Palace, Castel dell’Ovo and the Archaeological Museum are all within a short walk or cheap taxi ride of the terminal — a full day without a single train or ferry.
