Santorini cruise port without a tour
You do not need a booked excursion to enjoy Santorini. You need the terminal facts, the right transport and a firm return time. Here is all three.
Doing it yourself
Doing Santorini alone is mostly a queueing problem, not a navigation one. Buy the cable car ticket at the booth in Skala, go up, and from Fira the KTEL bus station is a five-minute walk inland — buses to Oia, Kamari, Perissa and Akrotiri leave often enough that you rarely wait more than 30 minutes, and fares are a couple of euros. Pay the driver in cash.
The part people get wrong is the return. Work backwards: leave your last stop early enough to catch a bus to Fira, then join the cable car queue with an hour to spare, then still queue for the tender. If that maths feels tight, walk the 588 steps down instead — it is steep and shared with donkeys, but the queue never stops you.

Port day questions
Do I need to book the cable car in advance?
No, and you cannot. You buy at the booth in Skala and join the line. That is exactly why the queue, not the ticket, is what you plan around.
Can I use local buses on a port day?
Yes. KTEL buses run from Fira to Oia, Kamari, Perissa and Akrotiri for a few euros, paid in cash to the driver. Check the return departure board when you arrive, not when you leave.
