What is worth booking

The clearest thing worth booking in Valletta is a Grand Harbour boat trip — seeing the bastion walls and the Three Cities from the water is a genuinely different view from anything you get on foot, and it uses time that the lift queue would otherwise eat into on a crowded morning. A pre-arranged transfer to Mdina is worth it for the same reason as Santorini’s cable car: it turns the day’s one real variable, the bus timetable, into a fixed appointment.

What is not worth paying for is a guided walk of Valletta itself. The old city is small, flat and clearly signed, so a group tour mostly buys you a fixed pace and someone else’s schedule for ground you could cover faster alone — the exception is a timed entry to St John’s Co-Cathedral in high season, which is really booking a queue-skip, not a guide.

Port day questions

Is a Grand Harbour boat tour worth booking?

Yes — it shows you the bastions and the Three Cities from an angle no walking route gives you, and it is hard to arrange casually on a short port day without knowing the departure points in advance.

Should I book a guided transfer to Mdina instead of the bus?

It is worth it mainly for certainty — a booked transfer fixes your return time, where the public bus leaves that to the timetable and the queue at the stop.
