The Three Cities crossing is the low-risk version of a Valletta side trip: an eight-minute ferry from the waterfront, running often enough that you are rarely waiting long in either direction. There is no lift queue or bus timetable to work around, so it slots into a day that already includes the cathedral and the palace without forcing a choice between them.
Because crossings are frequent, the last safe return is more forgiving here than for Mdina — you can afford to wander Vittoriosa’s quieter waterfront and fortifications without watching the clock as closely. What you give up is minimal: at most an hour you might have spent lingering in Valletta itself. It is the easier of the two connections to add on, not the more rewarding one to build a whole day around.
