Corfu in 5 hours from the cruise port
A 5-hour window in Corfu is enough for a real day — if you spend it in the right order. Here is a plan timed backwards from your safe return, not forwards from a wish list.
Ships dock at Corfu’s New Port, on the edge of the Old Town rather than out at Igoumenitsa or the airport side of the island. From the pier it’s about 1.5 to 2 km to the Old Town gates — a free or paid port shuttle covers it in around ten minutes, local blue buses stop a short walk from the terminal and reach the centre in a similar time, and the walk itself is flat and coastal, doable in 20 to 25 minutes if you’d rather stretch your legs. There’s no tendering and no immigration queue to budget for — Greece is inside Schengen, so the only line you’ll meet is the one for the shuttle.

Independent vs guided
Corfu rewards independent exploring. The Old Town’s lanes, the Old Fortress, Liston and Spianada are all within walking distance of each other and of the port, and local buses reach Kanoni and the airport-side viewpoints cheaply. Achilleion Palace is the one stretch goal — about 10 km south in Gastouri — where a taxi (fixed fare, round trip with waiting time) or a guided half-day tour saves you working out bus connections on a clock. If your ship is in for a short call, a guided tour bundling the Old Town with Achilleion is the more relaxed choice.

Does the ship dock or tender at Corfu?
Corfu is a dock port. Ships tie up at a proper quay at the New Port, about 1.5 to 2 km from the Old Town — no tendering involved.
How far is the Old Town from the cruise terminal?
Roughly 1.5 to 2 km. A shuttle or local bus covers it in about 10 minutes, and it’s a flat, walkable 20 to 25 minutes along the coast road if you skip the ride.
Is Achilleion Palace worth the trip?
If you have at least three to four hours ashore to spare, yes. It’s about 10 km south of town, roughly 20 to 25 minutes each way by taxi, with entry and a look around adding an hour or more.
Do I need to clear immigration in Corfu?
No separate immigration stop for most cruisers — Greece is part of the Schengen area, so there’s no border queue to add to your time budget, only the walk or shuttle into town.
