You do not need a booked excursion to enjoy Corfu. You need the terminal facts, the right transport and a firm return time. Here is all three.
Doing it yourself
Corfu is one of the easier Greek ports to do alone, because there’s no bottleneck to plan around — just a choice of how to cover the 1.5 to 2 km between the New Port and the Old Town gates. The port shuttle and the local blue bus both stop within a short walk of the terminal and take about ten minutes; buy the shuttle ticket at the small kiosk near the gangway if it isn’t free that day, or pay the driver on the blue bus. Walking the same stretch along the flat coast road takes 20 to 25 minutes and needs no ticket at all.
The part people misjudge is Achilleion Palace, not the Old Town. It’s about 10 km south in Gastouri, and a taxi there and back with time to look around can easily run past two hours once you count waiting for the return leg — there’s no scheduled public bus that makes this simple, so agree a fixed round-trip fare with the driver before you set off rather than hailing one-way and hoping. If that math doesn’t fit your afternoon, Kanoni is a shorter taxi ride with a similar view-driven payoff.
