A 5-hour window in Dubrovnik is enough for a real day — if you spend it in the right order. Here is a plan timed backwards from your safe return, not forwards from a wish list.
Ships dock at Gruž, Dubrovnik’s commercial and passenger harbour, about 3 km northwest of the Old Town — there’s no berth at Stradun or Pile Gate itself. Local Libertas buses 1A, 1B and 3 run from stops near the terminal to Pile, the Old Town’s main gate; door to door, budget 20 to 30 minutes once you account for the walk to the stop and a possible wait, with tickets around €2.50 paid on board. Taxis take about 10 minutes and cost roughly €15 to €20. Some cruise lines run their own coach shuttles timed to the ship’s schedule — check your line’s terminal signage rather than assuming a fixed port-wide service. Walking the 3 km along the coast road takes 30 to 40 minutes and isn’t worth it on a short call.
