Doing Dubrovnik alone comes down to the Gruž-to-Pile bus ride, and that part is simple once you know where to stand. Libertas buses 1A, 1B and 3 stop on the main road a short walk from the terminal gate — look for the marked shelter rather than guessing, buy a ticket from the driver for around the standard local fare, and ride to the Pile Gate stop, which puts you right at the Old Town entrance. City walls tickets are sold at booths just inside Pile Gate itself, not online-only, so you can still buy on arrival, though the line lengthens fast once several ships are in.
Where people misjudge the day is the return bus, not the outbound one. Those same 1A, 1B and 3 services fill up fast in the late afternoon as everyone heads back to Gruž at once, and a full bus means waiting for the next one rather than boarding immediately. Build in one missed bus as a buffer, or flag a taxi from the rank near Pile Gate if your window is tight — it costs more but removes the guesswork entirely, and it’s the honest fallback when the queue at the bus stop looks longer than your remaining time.

Can I buy city walls tickets on the day?
Yes, at booths just inside Pile Gate, but the walk-up line grows through the morning whenever multiple ships are in port. If your call is short, buying online before you leave the ship removes that wait entirely.
