You do not need a booked excursion to enjoy Katakolon. You need the terminal facts, the right transport and a firm return time. Here is all three.
Doing it yourself
Katakolon’s own train station sits a short walk from the pier, past the seafront strip, and the ticket window only opens shortly before departure — there is no advance online booking, so the real task is being there early enough to actually get a seat, not researching schedules from home. If the train doesn’t line up with your call, taxis wait in a rank right at the foot of the gangway; agree the round-trip fare, the waiting time at the site and the exact return time before you get in, and take a note of the car’s number, since several drivers offer near-identical fares and you want the one you actually paid.
The mistake people make is treating the return as flexible. Ancient Olympia has one main gate and one taxi and coach pickup area outside it, and if you drift back ten minutes late, your taxi may already be gone with another fare, and the next train might not run for hours. Set a firm leave-Olympia time before you go in, and treat the walk back to the pickup point as part of your visit, not an afterthought.

Port day questions
Can I buy Olympia train tickets in advance?
Not really — the Katakolon station kiosk sells tickets shortly before each departure, in person. There’s no meaningful online booking for this short heritage line, so plan to arrive at the station with time to spare rather than assuming a reserved seat.
What happens if I miss my taxi back from Olympia?
You wait for another one to free up, which can take a while if several ships are in port the same day. Agreeing a fixed return time and sticking to it is the only real safeguard, since there’s no taxi rank inside the site itself.
