What is worth booking

The honest case for booking here has nothing to do with the trains being hard to use — they are simple — and everything to do with what happens when they are full. In peak season a small-group tour with a private boat or a reserved coach slot sidesteps the one real risk of a DIY Cinque Terre day: standing on a packed platform watching trains leave without you while your all-aboard gets closer. If your sailing has an early return time, that guarantee is worth paying for.

What is a waste of money is any big-bus “see all five villages” package. The villages have no road access for coaches — the train, a boat, or the coastal trail are the only ways in — so a bus tour can only ever get you to a viewpoint or drop you at the station, not into Riomaggiore’s or Vernazza’s actual lanes. If an excursion promises all five by coach, it is not describing the Cinque Terre it sounds like it is.

Port day questions

Is a ship excursion worth it when the train works so well on its own?

Mainly for two situations: an early all-aboard that leaves no room for a missed train, or peak summer crowding where a private boat or reserved transport skips the platform gamble entirely.

What excursion should I be suspicious of?

Any package promising all five villages by coach. There is no road into the villages themselves — access is by train, boat or trail — so a bus-based tour is, at best, a scenic drive and a station drop-off, not a visit to the villages.
