La Spezia cruise port without a tour
You do not need a booked excursion to enjoy La Spezia. You need the terminal facts, the right transport and a firm return time. Here is all three.
La Spezia is a dock port. Depending on your ship, the terminal can sit anywhere from a ten-minute to a half-hour walk from La Spezia Centrale station — check your berth on arrival rather than assuming. A local bus (lines S, L or 3) covers the gap in about ten minutes for a couple of euros, a taxi is under ten minutes for around €15, and there is also a seasonal tourist trolley. At the station, the Cinque Terre Express regional train runs every 15–30 minutes and gets crowded fast in high season; if you plan three or more village stops, the Cinque Terre Treno Card (roughly €22–35 depending on the day) covers unlimited train travel plus trail access and usually pays for itself. Buy it at the station before you board the first train.

Independent is the natural way to do the Cinque Terre — the train line was built for exactly this, hopping village to village at your own pace. The only real argument for a guided option is the summer crowd crush: escorted small groups sometimes get priority boarding or a private boat, which matters if your all-aboard is early. Otherwise, buy the Treno Card, pick your villages before you leave the port, and go — this is one of the few port days where independent beats guided on both cost and experience.
