The port-to-station leg is the variable most people get wrong here: depending on your berth, La Spezia Centrale can be a ten-minute walk or a twenty-five-minute bus or taxi ride, so check on arrival rather than planning around a number from a forum post. Port day questions
Do single tickets need validating the same way as the Treno Card?
Yes, differently. A paper single ticket must be stamped at the small platform machine before every ride. The Treno Card is time-stamped once, when you first use it, and covers unlimited rides within its validity window after that.
What happens if a train is too full to board?
It happens routinely in August. The next one is usually along within fifteen to thirty minutes, which is exactly why the safe last departure from each village allows for a missed train rather than assuming the first one that arrives is yours.
