La Spezia to Monterosso al Mare from the cruise port

Monterosso al Mare is the reason most ships call at La Spezia. The question is never “is it worth it” — it is “can I get back in time”. Here is the honest math.

La Spezia → Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso is the far end of the line from La Spezia at around twenty-three minutes, and the largest of the five villages, with an actual sand beach alongside the old town. The trip out is straightforward — ten to thirty minutes to the station, then the ride — but being at the far end means every stage of the return, from finding a seat on a crowded train to the port-to-station leg once you are back in La Spezia, compounds if anything runs late.

Because of that position, treat three hours before all-aboard as the safe departure from Monterosso, not two, especially in high season when trains fill before they even reach the platform. What you get for that margin is real beach time alongside a village walk, which none of the other four villages offer. As a single stop this round trip is sane for most sailings, but it is the tightest of the train connections, and it is not one to combine with another village on the same day without a very early start.
